NRC is intimately involved with the highly successful, well publicized and groundbreaking Derelict Fishing Gear Removal Program in Washington State waters. NRC is directly working in several capacities coordinating the many different agencies and organizations involved in this work. The NRC team of field biologists and researchers is responsible for nearly all of the hands-on, on-the-water work of removing derelict gear and are directly responsible for all aspects of data collection including documenting when, where and how much gear of what type is removed and all associated biological information from the gear removals. NRC publishes the findings of both pre-removal surveys to locate and quantify derelict fishing gear and also final reports after field work is completed to successfully remove the derelict fishing gear. NRC coordinates this work with a variety of federal, state and private entities including, Northwest Straits Commission, the Marine Resources Committees of Whatcom, Skagit, San Juan, Snohomish, Clallam, Jefferson, and Island counties, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, U.S. Navy, Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife, Washington Department of Natural Resources, Washington Sea Grant Program, Puget Sound Water Quality Action Team, several Washington Tribes, Hood Canal Salmon Enhancement Group, commercial fishing and diving companies, and private foundations.
